Wood Putty

The carpenter appeared to be finished building our deck. All the tools were wiped off and put away and he was ready for the final inspection. After closer examination, the carpenter found a few nicks and gouges that required some attention in order for the deck to suit him perfectly. Removing one last “tool” from his truck – a can of wood putty – he proceeded to finish the job. He then filled in the nicks and gouges and smoothed out the rough edges.
When the Master Carpenter enters our life, He slowly, but surely, initiates a remodeling project. We will face choices, experience changes, and along the way we will probably undergo inspection by the people who think they know us best. Everyone likes to keep track of building processes, whether it is road construction in areas where we travel, the neighborhood you live in, or the life you lead. People will observe our progress and take note.
The book of Acts describes the early church and how each new believer was an example of dedication to God and to helping others. The new Christians testified to the powerful changes that Christ can make in a person. Several accounts of the first converts describe a people “who were devoted to the teaching of the Word, to prayer, and to each other. And they were filled with wonder and awe at the changes and growth that was happening around them.” (Acts 2:42-43)
For many years I felt a lack of fulfillment in simply attending church. It did not satisfy my soul to be a mere spectator. I felt an increasing awareness that I was starting to pattern my life to be a consumer, rather than a contributor. I have since discovered that serving and contributing is part of the opportunity – and the challenge – of following Christ.
Wayne Dyer said, “If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at will change.” Hard times force us to grow in ways we could never imagine. So does helping others through hard times and difficult situations. Those experiences shift our perspective and help us get through the everyday challenges we face. Having Christ in our lives is a powerful way to find meaning in demanding moments because He is willing to walk through the tough stuff with us.
Over the years I have learned that peace can replace pain. Unity can replace discord. Brokenness can be replaced with contentment. Fear can be changed into courage. A difficult past can be directed toward a brighter future.
My prayer this week is for you to be filled with wonder and awe at how God works in your life as you allow Him to fill the cracks in your heart.
